Which type of battery should be selected for energy storage power stations

Time:2023-11-15 Views:

For China, a major energy producing and consuming country, energy storage is considered the next frontier for new energy and has been included in the outline of the 12th Five Year Plan. As a forward-looking technology for promoting the development of the new energy industry in the future, the energy storage industry will play a huge role in new energy grid connection, new energy vehicles, smart grids, microgrids, distributed energy systems, and home energy storage systems. The adoption of large-scale energy storage technology can promote the development of renewable energy, improve the safety and stability of the power grid, improve the quality of power supply, and effectively alleviate the contradiction between electricity supply and demand.

In 2018, the national and global installed capacity of energy storage doubled, and even in accident prone South Korea, the installed capacity continued to rise. Overall, problems with energy storage systems in China are relatively rare, but recent incidents of electric vehicles, charging stations, and other fires have occurred in multiple places. For energy storage systems, battery safety has also been the most critical issue in the development of this industry, and many energy storage projects that have caught fire often have unknown causes. Safety accidents are random events, and once they occur with serious consequences, the potential hazards and hidden dangers need to be addressed.

It is understood that energy storage technology is mainly divided into mechanical energy storage, electrochemical energy storage, electromagnetic energy storage, and phase change energy storage. In recent years, electrochemical energy storage technology represented by lithium-ion batteries has met the technical requirements of power systems and the development trend of smart grids. It has been regarded as a research focus by research institutions in various countries and has become the fastest developing energy storage technology in power systems. Lithium ion battery technology has been rapidly developing with the research of battery electrode materials. Currently, it has expanded from lithium cobalt oxide batteries to ternary systems, lithium manganese oxide, lithium iron phosphate, lithium titanate, and other battery systems coexisting. Due to its own safety performance issues, ternary lithium batteries do not have the qualification to be used for energy storage; Lithium titanate batteries, with significantly better performance than existing lithium-ion batteries, were once hailed as one of the most promising energy storage batteries in the field of energy storage.

In third-party safety tests, the silver long lithium titanate battery did not experience leakage, fire, or explosion after undergoing safety tests such as steel needle puncture, electric drill puncture, vertical cutting, burning with high fire for 40 minutes, overcharging and discharging for 1 hour, and soaking in water for 2 hours. On the other hand, the service life of Yinlong lithium titanate batteries is as long as 30 years, and the first 10 years can still be used as automotive power batteries for 20 years in the energy storage field.
